"I hate you." Jane screamed at me at the top of her voice, I decided to re-evaluate my position, sitting on the window ledge was not wise with her in this mood, I tried to answer but was shot down, "Why don't you ever talk these things over with me, we had a plan." She continued. My eyes darted around the room to check what was in easy reach, it wasn't beyond her to throw a glass or pan, with surprising force for a petite woman. The problem had arose because I had booked us a last minute surprise holiday, 2 weeks in Scotland, in a swanky hotel. We had been saving hard and we were still in this crud hole of a room because she didn't want to move. She wanted to save, stay here and eventually buy a place together, I wanted to move, it was an impasse that caused a lot of shouting. Surprises was not something Jane did well and when I turned up with the tickets she exploded. Now I'm not sure if it's all Russian women that are that hot headed or just her, but she didn't really speak to me for a week, even when we were packing our bags all I got was the occasional grunt and murmur under her breath, it was in the taxi on the way to the airport she finally broke.
"So, where are we staying." She snapped, I hesitated to answer knowing it might set off another bout of screaming. "The savoy." I replied with a nervous twang in my voice, waiting for the backlash I paused. "Nice" She replied sarcastically, "and you can treat me to a nice meal too." I knew I wasn't out of the woods yet, but I had an ace up my sleeve. As we walked to check-in she started to que up at the normal check-in desk, I gently tugged at her arm and guided her to the first class desk, she looked confused but a small smile started to creep across her face, "Really?" she asked, "really" I replied. After check-in we got to use the first class lounge, these places are such fun, free champagne and nibbles, but I had something else sorted too, I had arranged for a big bunch of flowers to be waiting for her, I was just praying they had done it. Sure enough as soon as we walked through the door a nice young lady gave her the flowers, now there was a massive grin on her face. Now the holiday could start, I felt her hand slip into mine as we took our seats on the plane, she had forgiven me.
We both fell in love with Edinburgh within days of being there, the sites, the sounds, the history. Both of us loved our history, we spent many months during the summer traipsing around London or other citys soaking up the culture, it was a shared love. Edinburgh was perfect, lots of shops and lots of history, and with my love of whisky, we were set. It was about half way through the holiday when I realised I wanted to spend the rest of my life with this woman, we were sitting at a road side cafe watching some street performers, we had taken a break because Jane had one of her migraines coming on. Watching her sitting there the sun shining on her face, I fell in love with her all over again, the arguments over the past few weeks just melted away and I very nearly popped the question then and there. No, I thought, hold on and do it right it had to be special it had to be planned, so the planing began...
